I founded Zena Consulting in 2008 to help leaders and managers communicate better in today's complex marketplace. My mission is improving equity through business capacity and growth. My vision is a thriving USA economy, where everyone can succeed- regardless of culture, gender, age, or location.
I often approach communication through the lens of diversity and inclusion. Leaders see me as a liaison between systems and people, who balances a variety of stakeholder views. Owner-operated and based in the Northwest, I work with local Associates, and curate a network of strategic partners and subject matter experts for larger projects. Zena Consulting is a Washington state OMWBE-certified DBE.
The common theme in my career is persuasive communications. I started out as a copywriter in ad agencies. This gave me a feel for sales and marketing. Next, I started designing and delivering training for community-based organizations, in the fields of education and family support- the social profit sector. There, I noticed how poor communication sometimes created outreach gaps between mainstream organizations and minority families. Acting as a liaison, I noticed:
leaders struggled to reach diversity and inclusion goals
ineffective outreach hit children the hardest, especially low-income ones
weak relationships and cross-cultural communication skills often compromised staff's worthy efforts
global communication tools aren't designed to address the subtlety and complexity of USA populations
Diversity is a given in today's marketplace. Inclusion makes it happen. Customers and employees are demanding real change. Now.
Doing nothing isn't enough. Being neutral is impossible.
Diversity is part of your job– ready or notHow do you optimize the benefits of diversity, but minimize the risks? What does inclusion mean to your organization? What's the best way to engage new customers and motivate teams? How can you be sure?
Clients say working with me improves:
Executive and staff confidence with new demographic groups
Engagement and outreach results
Team productivity through reduced conflict and better communication

My Process
Diversity and inclusion is a big topic and you want to get it right. But what does that mean to your organization? "If we build it they will come," is a passive approach to improving results. My proactive strategies help you compete and grow in today's marketplace.
We start with your strengths and organizational culture. Strategies, data, and solutions flow from there, along with tools I bring to help you build skills and experience. Here's how I work:
1. Discover: What strengths can you tap into and what audiences might you be overlooking?
2. Plan: What communication strategies match regional market data and will leverage your capacity and goals?
3. Implement: Which services will support your goals, embed skills, and build experience, so your effort is sustainable?
4. Measure: How will we know it's working- so your investment pays off and you stay motivated to keep learning?
I developed this free "How Can We Be More Diverse?" test in response to questions clients ask me and communication gaps I see. Take the test, then schedule your call here.
Professionals in all sectors: executives, business owners, directors, department heads (HR or change management), and boards of directors.
We'll use the results of your 5 Messaging Blind Spots Test results to talk about your fears, worries, and the challenges of leading or managing in today's complex marketplace.
What you'll get
This no-obligation call will give us a better idea of whether we're a good fit, and how my services will support your goals. You don't have to know what you want. Just schedule a call.

CHALLENGE
The Agape House wanted to attract new funders to better serve their target market: young Black and brown women who are at risk of being trafficked when they age out of the foster care system.
SOLUTIONS
My analysis and report included perspectives on the organization's progress and overlooked cross-cultural funding or partnering opportunities. A second engagement included partnership development and grantwriting.
RESULTS
My report helped the board assess strengths and pursue untapped funding opportunities. This yielded a contract with a larger, more established agency.
CHALLENGE
A sophisticated, mono-cultural Boomer and GenX team was preparing for a crucial meeting with new Japanese partners. My discovery process revealed a classic individualist (US and Canadian) versus collectivist (Asian and Asian-American) approach to doing business and power dynamics.
SOLUTION
I designed and facilitated an executive retreat which started with a team skills inventory, review of Japanese culture, and a discussion on their transferable global skills, roles, and responsibilities.
RESULTS
The client was so pleased with the full day retreat, I repeated the training with staff. See more Training Results
CHALLENGE
"Teach us to swim, our children are drowning". This was the first request at a meeting of American Muslim program participants at the North Seattle Family Center, where staff had seen a drop in services that provided food (WIC) to low-income children. Mothers also cited higher isolation and depression.
SOLUTIONS
I facilitated meetings with community leaders and staff to find a pool that would meet the women's modesty standards and create a fun, inter-generational, and affordable activity. The weekly Sister's Swim galvanized the community, helped kids learn to swim, and created new partnerships between city agencies and citizens.
RESULTS
Still in operation today, this program quickly attracted sustainable funding and has been replicated in other cities. WIC participation returned to previous levels quickly. It was featured in the Seattle Times and NPR radio, and won praise from Seattle's Mayor Nickels. See Press
CHALLENGE
The Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce sought to increase small, women, and minority-owned business membership.
SOLUTION
I designed and facilitated diversity forums and trainings, as chair of the Small & Multicultural Business Development Committee of a Chamber partner, the Urban Enterprise Center. A second project captured the story of cross-cultural collaboration between mainstream and multicultural businesses and communities.
RESULTS
The diversity forums were well attended by new, minority business owners, and yielded results such as:
increased multicultural membership
creation of full-time, Small & Multicultural Business Development position, which was held by Regina Glenn
the Chamber's first woman CEO, Maude Daudon, followed by Marilyn Strickland, (current)

Challenge- Agape House needed more funding for their programs- which supports young Black and brown women transitioning out of foster care, and who are at risk of homelessness or being trafficked.
Solutions- My communications audit found overlooked strengths and PARTNERSHIP opportunities.
Results- The board leveraged my report to attract a larger agency to build capacity and support.

Training
Challenge- The region's philanthropic community is raising the bar on equity, diversity and inclusion outcomes for grant recipients. Puget Sound Grantwriter's Association, (PSGA), members need the expertise to meet this expectation.
Solution- I designed and co-presented a training with Chanya Allen, entitled: “Writing About Equity with Confidence & Credibility”, to help PSGA members understand E/D/I ethics, best-practices, and their impact. It included a facilitating a panel discussion with funding officers from private and public foundations.
Results- The event sold out and a follow-on was requested. See testimonial from participant, below.

Facilitation
Challenge- "Teach us to swim, our children are drowning". This was the first request at a meeting of American Muslim women at the North Seattle Family Center, where there was a drop in the food assistance (WIC) program for low-income children after the events of 9/11. In fact, several Muslim youth had perished off the shores of Seattle city parks in recent years.
Solutions- I facilitated meetings with community leaders and staff to find a facility that would meet the women's modesty standards and create a fun and affordable physical activity for women and children.
Results- These popular events re-engaged the community, helped families learn to swim, and created new partnerships between the city and it's citizens. Still operating today, the volunteer-run Sister's Swim quickly attracted funding, was featured in the Seattle Times and NPR Radio, and won praise from the mayor. Replicated in other cities, the program now welcomes all females, while meeting the needs of those who practice gender-separation.
